We have started our membership drive for 2017-2018 and to reach goal we will need everyone involved in recruiting. Board meeting on the 16th.  If you are interested in joining the Legion Riders Contact Joey Cook Legion Riders Director. We gained on the South Houston Post last year. We can become the largest American Legion Post in Texas again if each of you recruit members, and you are willing to assist in keeping new members. We are still raising funds from Legion hats, flags, and t-shirt sales.  Your continued support for your post with your purchases is important to the Post’s success. I again ask for your support making FRIDAY’S RED FRIDAY’S to Remember Everyone Deployed until they all come home. I would love to see the Post in a complete RED OUT on Fridays to show support for the people we have in harm’s way. I request support on Saturdays to wear BLUE to show support our first responder Police and Fire officers in our community and nationwide. I would like to ask for support and for us all to be respectful as we go forward with the new changes making the post non-smoking that was effective November 1st.   The raffle drawing for the car will be on Friday night November 17th at 8:00 PM. Tickets will available until then. For God and Country Dennis Gossett – Commander Phone: 817-372-0938 al_post379@att.net AUXILIARY NEWS Hello Ladies.  November is the month of thanks and I am very thankful for all of the support that the members of the Legion, Auxiliary, S.A.L., Riders and 40&8 gave for our Cancer Research Fundraiser on October 1st.  We had 198 baskets and gift cards to raffle off and the pancake breakfast was awesome.  To date we have more than $9,000 to be sent to M. D. Anderson.  Thank you one and all. Also, I thank everyone for their support of the benefit for Wayne Maddux.  Approximately $1,800 will be given to assist him during his current health issues.  Several activities are planned for Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11.  Grapevine Veterans’ Day Parade, Salute to Veterans at Hurst Conference Center, and Early Bird Party from Noon to 4 p.m.  Please check with any Legion officer or Auxiliary officer for more details. On November 18 we will be having a BAKE SALE to raise money for Girls’ State.  Homemade baked goods only!  There will be raffles for the donated items and a live auction for Peanut Butter Pie, Rum Cake, Amaretto Cake, and Chocolate Cherry Rum Cake.  All homemade goods are great, even small portions like individual brownies or ½ dozen cookies.  Please have baked goods here by noon on November 18th and the bake sale will be from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. On Thanksgiving Day, the Post will be open at 10:00 with lunch being served between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.  The Legion will provide the meats and sides are requested.  Our 2018 dues can now be paid and they are still $31.00 a year.  You can mail them in or drop them off with the bartenders.  Look forward to seeing you at our meeting on November 2 at 7 p.m. Theresa Winslow - Unit President LEGION 1ST VICE UPDATE The post membership is at 800 members which is 64% of our goal of 1,252 members. On November 1st our goal is 65%. The last day you can sign up for early bird is Saturday November 11 between 12-4pm. A reminder that we have two membership drives on November 11th, one at the Hurst Conference Center, salute to veterans day and one at grapevine during the veterans day parade.  U.S. Representative Kenny Marchant will be at the Grapevine parade. Jim Grau - 1st Vice Commander CHAPLAIN’S CORNER A valued member of the Legion and the Honor Guard underwent triple bypass surgery on 10/9 and was released on 10/16. Surgery went well and the Drs said that he had actually suffered no heart damage. Talk about a blessing. The Supreme being was certainly guiding that operating teams minds and hands. He took his first walk 1 week after surgery and did well. He requested that his name be withheld and so be it. He needs our prayers so let us not let him or his family down.  Joey Cook had arm surgery during the week of October 16. This was the first of four surgeries he has to look forward to. These four include shoulder surgeries. These injuries occurred during his service to our great country so let us pray and honor him for his sacrifice. He will also be receiving neck surgery in the future for at least 2 bulging/fractured disks. Let us show our support to Joey during these trying times. Wayne Maddox is still undergoing chemo and radiation treatments for his bout with esophageal cancer - with no or little insurance. Our fellow member would welcome any help from you our loyal and patriotic members. I have noticed during the month of October that meeting attendance has dropped dramatically. I think we all have a pretty good idea of why. Let us realize that our Post has been good to all of us and continues to do so. Look into your hearts for the reason for non attendance to see if it is helping or hurting our POST. I think that you will come to the decision that all of you not attending will realize for not attending is not in the best interest of our beloved POST 379. Hope to see you in next months meetings and activities. Thank you. For God and Country Craig Smith - Smitty Chaplain Post 379 GRAPEVINE PARADE SATURDAY November 11 - 10AM SON’S SYNOPSIS Another reminder of Veterans Day on Saturday, November 11.  It will be a good time to meet with your friends and members at Post 379.  Check in with the Post Commander for a ride to the parade.  It is time to pay your 2018 dues and be eligible for the Early Bird Party on Veterans Day.  From Colin Powell: “Work is honorable.  Always do your best because someone is watching.  Dig up all information you can, then go with your instincts.   There is no end to the good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit. Never believe the first thing you hear.” Ron Mick Squadron 379 Commander LEGION RIDERS No Rider news for November.  Our next meeting will be Sunday November 12th at 2pm. Be Safe and Keep the Rubber Side Down! Joey “Crash” Cook, Director, ALR Post 379 Pepito.cook@gmail.com VETERANS DAY PRAYER God of peace, we pray for those who have served our nation and have laid down their lives to protect and defend our freedom. We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day. We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm's way. Shield them from danger and bring them home. Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and a harvest of peace. Spare the poor, Lord, spare the poor! May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us. Christ Jesus, hear us! Lord Jesus, hear our prayer! Amen.
