COMMANDER’S MESSAGE Greetings Post, I hope everyone is doing well getting through this winter weather, and flu season. The upcoming month has many events that need your participation. Thursday the 1st is General Membership meeting at 7:00 PM. We will host the 12th District Commanders Call at 7:00 PM on the 5th. Saturday the 10th the Post will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a Dinner and Dance that evening. Sunday the 11th we will have a 4 Chaplains Service that afternoon. Thursday the 15th will be Executive Board meeting at 7:00 P.M. I ask again for your continued cooperation in making Post #379 a welcoming & fun Post for all our members, and especially new members. We are currently at roughly 1076 of our membership goal of 1252 keep working as we still need 176 to reach goal. If interested in becoming an Honor Guard member contact the Mike Sivers Honor Guard Commander to join or show up for practice before the General Membership and Exec. Board meetings in Proctor Hall at 6:00 PM.  If interested in joining the Legion Riders Contact Joey Cook Legion Riders Director, or see bartenders for an application. We can become the largest American Legion Post in Texas again if each one of you assist in the recruiting effort. We are still raising funds from Legion hats, flags, and t-shirt sales.  Your continued support for your post with your purchases is important to the Post’s success. Please continue making FRIDAY’S RED FRIDAY’S to Remember Everyone Deployed until they all come home. The Post 379 election committee will begin their work vetting candidates and their work on the election at the Feb. 1, 2018 General Membership meeting. A sign up list for members desiring to be candidates for office will be posted as soon as the election committee can get organized and up to speed. Please continue keeping the Post members that are recovering from illness in your thoughts and prayers. Tickets are now on sale for $20.00 each which includes soup, salad, loaded baked potatoes, steak and dessert.  Deadline for reservations is Sunday, February 4.  If you don’t buy a ticket in advance, the cost at the door will be $25.00.  We will be having a Mardi Gras party on February 17 with chicken and sausage gumbo, shrimp etouffee, red beans and rice and dessert. A mask contest will be one of the featured “things to do” so get your talents working to create your mask! We will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday, March 17.  Gisela will be serving her famous corned beef and cabbage so mark your calendars. Department Convention will be held in San Antonio this year on July 11 thru 15, 2018.  If you are interested in going, please let me know and I will give you the particulars. We need 168 new members/renewals to meet our goal of 1,252. We need the help of ALL our members to meet the goal! A mailer is going out to members who have NOT renewed sometime this coming week, We also will start making phone calls for renewals and need all the help we can get. Please Contact me if you can devote any time to calling renewals. Thank You! For GOD & COUNTRY Jim Grau - 1st Vice Commander CHAPLAIN’S CORNER I checked in on Wayne Maddox a few times last month.  It is great to report that Wayne is finally out of Rehab and on the road to recovery.  He came by the Post to say hello last week. I saw Lou Patkos is in HEB ICU on the 20th. Lou is suffering from severe COPD. Travis Crawford is under Hospice care at the home of Karen Averett.  Travis would like visitors.  The Post has Karen’s phone number is you would like to call and arrange a visit. Jim Garcia is still in Southwest recouping from open heart surgery. Howard Stevens is in rehab recovering from a severe staph infection. Joey Cook is still looking at more surgeries. I suggest and hope that we all keep our friends and their families in our prayers-especially with this nasty flu going around. I am not aware of and members that are affected. If you know of anyone, please let me know at 817-266-6808 with a contact number for them. I would greatly appreciate your help. For God and Country. Craig Smith - Smitty Chaplain Post 379 SAL NEWS Greetings from Squadron 379 here is what we are currently doing for the Post and our community. Our membership as of January 2018 is 113 of 156 goals. I encourage everyone to sign up and introduce yourself to new members and let them know what the American Legion is all about. To become a member of the SAL, you must be a descendant of an American Legion member. Our next meeting will on Thursday February 8th at 7pm. The donations that we as a Squadron donate to are the Tarrant County Food Bank, Josh Dog Program, Veterans Dogs of American and PTSD of American. These fine organizations support our community and Veterans and their families. Next month we will have another story that impacts children and their families at Cooks Children Medical in Fort Worth. I encourage everyone to attend our Fish Fry in February, Ronnie Mac and his staff has been putting out great food and service. Our Saturday Meat Raffle has fallen off the last couple of weeks. We would like very much to have our Legion family tell one of our officers why this is so. Your opinions matter. We have added mystery gift to our raffle.  Jim Grau was the winner of 2 40 & 8 Steak Dinners at the January 6th raffle.  There will be 3 mystery gifts as a part of each Saturday raffle. In review of 2017 is what the Squadron has done for the Veterans and families and the community. Josh Dog Program we sent out 5 cases in total 50 Josh dogs. Tarrant Food Bank we donated $1400.00 dollars. Veteran Dogs $1400.00, this program if you are unaware is a program that takes dogs from the shelter and trains them to be service animals for the Veterans who need them. PTSD Foundation $1200.00, we started last year out of Houston. They are a program that will take the Veteran and give them help with counseling, drug and Alcohol rehab as well as education and training. We are looking into helping the post with the pool tables. New rails and felt along with some other minor upkeep. Ron Mick Squadron 379 Commander LEGION RIDERS Our Yahtzee game is still doing well. We have no meals scheduled for the month of February.   We have formed a partnership with the Sikh Riders (Details to follow). Out next meeting will be February 11th at 4pm.
